Josh replaced the snow globe on the mantle and took the photograph and the journal back to his room. Before he ascended the stairs, David stopped him.

“Josh, do you think you could do a little more research on this puzzle?”

“I was planning to, Dad. What do you have in mind?”

“So many things about Diana’s story didn’t add up,” David tapped his hand on the railing in frustration. Turquoise drifted into the living room, jangling her bracelets and hoisting her enormous white tote bag to her shoulder.

“Okay if I get going, David? I’m going to check on your father, then swing over to Eva’s to make sure the baby nurse your father asked me to hire is there and working out okay.”

“Yes, but one moment,” David turned to her. “That story Diana told us about Polly. Doesn’t it sound very odd to you?”

Turquoise shrugged. “The entire story sounded ridiculous. The lightning struck tower? It’s something from a tarot card deck.”

“A what?”

She whipped her cellphone from her tote bag and called up an image. “This. Tarot cards. I have an app that gives me a daily reading, like a card of the day. Each card has a message. This one is called the Tower or the Lightning Struck Tower.”

David saw an image on the tiny cellphone screen of a gray castle tower reminiscent of the rook piece in a chess game. Jagged lightning bolts crashed from a sky boiling with clouds, striking and cracking the tower in two. Men and women tumbled from either side of the tower, falling to their doom.

“That looks ominous.”

“It is. Catastrophe, death, big changes.” She clicked off the phone and grinned. “Luckily, I didn’t get that one today. I got it the day I bought the snow globe.”

They glanced at the globe. David cleared his throat. “I’ve always been a skeptic, but maybe there is something to this. Turquoise, why did you think she was lying?”

“Let me ask you this. If Eddie went missing, what would you do, besides freak out? I know what I would do if Emily or Elizabeth went missing. I’d call the police, I’d call every friend I have, and I wouldn’t stop searching until I dropped dead. Our Miss Diana was cavalier about missing Polly.”

“It has been a long time,” Josh shrugged.

David frowned. “Turquoise is right. Parents don’t give up.”

“She’s not the parent, she’s the aunt,” Josh reminded him. “And she didn’t sound like she liked Polly all that much.”

“I’m not sure how to interpret her response, and I think we should give her the benefit of the doubt,” David said. “After all, it’s been 50 years, and it wasn’t her child. But there must be some record of a child missing from an estate in Lloyd Harbor. Where do we start?”

“The internet,” Josh said. “Eddie and I can find almost anything. We’re on it.”

“Okay, and look up more about Andrew!” David called as Josh headed up the stairs.

“What do you hope to achieve by all of this, David?” Turquoise asked as she fished her car keys from her purse.
